Teaching is often described as one of the most rewarding yet challenging professions. The experiences over three days of teaching provided me with valuable insights into the life of a teacher. This reflection will detail my journey through this teaching experience, analyzing my competencies and feelings of readiness to enter the profession.
Day 1: An Introduction to Teaching Responsibilities
Overview of Activities
On the first day, I was primarily responsible for teaching Grade 3 learners in English Home Language and Afrikaans, along with lessons in geometry. The day started with a focus on independent writing, where I guided learners in composing letters and instructions for their peers. The activities were designed to encourage creativity and critical thinking.
Coping with Responsibilities
Managing the responsibilities on Day 1 was both exciting and overwhelming. I felt a surge of adrenaline as I prepared for the various activities, from writing letters to engaging with phonics and geometry. Walking around the classroom to assist learners reinforced my role as a facilitator of knowledge. I learned to adapt my teaching style to the needs of the learners, which was a crucial skill to develop early on.
Challenges Faced
The most challenging aspect of Day 1 was ensuring that every learner was engaged during the activities. Some learners required more attention than others, and I had to balance my time effectively to assist those who struggled. To overcome this, I implemented small group discussions where stronger learners could support their peers, fostering a collaborative environment.
